It was inevitable that the first article on this page will be about mbira, my Zimbabwean instrument of choice. I have been playing the mbira since 2001 when I was 17 and loved the various groups that Zimbabwe had to offer since that time.
Mbira can either be tuned as Devadzimu, Nyamaropa, Saungweme and Nemakonde. These are some of the known varieties the Zimbabwean traditional music. Despite the origins of the instrument not being clear some people have classified it as Zimbabwe's musical pride and joy.
The instrument is not new to HIFA and has been present from the inaugural session. The video seen here has a team of ana Gwenyambira who hail from different kiosks at the HIFA 2012 event. My Friends and I where waiting for the Mokoomba and Gregor Salto show when we came upon this impromptu, but magnificent table side performance.
Enjoy
